The JSTOR website has recently included the article that Richard Clutterbuck and I have published in the Archaeology Ireland magazine in April 2011.
The article Free Open Source Geographical Information System for Irish Archaeology describe the powerful software and free data available to archaeologists.
The same article is also available in this website, click here to go to the article.
A new free i Phone application called Louth Hidden History was recently developped by Archer, heritage planning and archaeology consultants based in Balbriggan (Co. Dublin).
The App aims to guide users around hidden or hard to find historic sites in County Louth using Search by Map and Search by Town functionalities. The Search by Map is based on Google Maps background showing twelve site locations while the Search by Town offers a simple list of towns and monuments links.
The application is simple, easy to use and the information is well delivered through videos on each historic site.
Again GIS is the best tool to work when it comes to site locations! In this case the Google Maps background is the perfect case as reprojecting monuments from TM75/Irish Grid (EPSG 29903) to the Google Mercator projection (EPSG 900913) will help on checking up site coordinates.
To download the application, type in Louth on your iTunes App Search and enjoy it!
For more info on the Louth Hidden History i Phone application see this video or contact Archer consultants.
Last Friday the 16th of March an article on the SpDAa project was posted on the Blog of the IAFS Blackfriary excavation (Trim, Co.Meath).
The Spatial Archaeological Database (SpADa) is an online database with GIS capabilities designed to link records from the site excavation archive with locations of finds and features.
It is interesting to see that last weekend the Blog article received over 100 hits, which confirms the high interest in the archaeology sector on the topic.
